You finally drop two or three stone after years of struggling with your weight. Your clothes fit better. You feel lighter and more confident. But then something weird happens. A simple glass of wine or a couple of drinks at a party hits you like a truck. You feel tipsy too fast, burst into tears over nothing, or end up slurring your words and nodding off. That is the strange new reality for some women using the popular weight-loss jab Mounjaro.
Mounjaro is one of those weekly injections that has taken the world by storm. It works by copying certain hormones in your body. These hormones tell your brain you feel full, slow down how fast your stomach empties, and help control blood sugar. Many people lose 15 to 20 percent of their body weight. In the UK alone, millions now use similar jabs like Mounjaro, Ozempic, or Wegovy. Doctors first made them for type 2 diabetes, but now lots of people use them just to slim down.
The good part is clear. Users often say it feels like magic. Food noise that constant thinking about snacks and meals – goes quiet. They eat less without feeling starved. But nothing comes without a catch. While most know about common side effects like nausea or stomach upset, a fresh story highlights something more surprising and life-changing for many women.
Meet some of the women opening up about it. Katy Shadbolt is 42 and runs a wedding venue in north Essex. She has three stepchildren and one of her own. In just four months on Mounjaro, she lost two-and-a-half stone. She used to enjoy a glass of rosé wine with lunch or a champagne welcome for guests at her venue. Now even one drink knocks her for six. She starts slurring, feels heavy, and sometimes nods off. At one dinner party she had to leave early. Her husband had to help her upstairs to bed. She says the change happened so quickly it left her confused. “I just can’t handle it anymore,” she told reporters. “I am someone who loves being social… but that’s impossible now.”
Another mum, Penny Whitaker, 45, from Suffolk, has three children. She started Mounjaro in July 2025 and dropped two stone. She returned to a size 10 she had not seen since her wedding day. Life sounded great until alcohol entered the picture. A couple of glasses of white wine or champagne at a wedding turned her into an emotional wreck. She became tearful, overly sensitive, and argued with her husband over small things. Their relationship had always been steady and happy, but suddenly she said hurtful things she did not mean. The next day she felt ashamed. At that wedding she danced without inhibitions – something her son found mortifying when he saw the video later. Penny now avoids wine completely. “I just don’t trust how it affects me any more,” she explained.
Rebecca Morris, 47 and a mother of two, shares a similar tale. She lost two stone after starting in August last year. She still wants a glass of wine while cooking or with friends, but now one or two glasses make her tipsy fast and very emotional. During a lovely lunch in Venice for a friend’s anniversary, a single glass of Sauvignon Blanc left her feeling overwhelmed. She had to go back to the hotel early. It felt embarrassing. Rebecca misses the relaxing feeling alcohol used to give. “I feel like Mounjaro has stolen one of my pleasures in life,” she said. “I can’t relax the way I used to… was it worth it?”
So why does this happen? Doctors have some clear answers. Mounjaro slows down how quickly your stomach empties. Food and drink stay there longer. Alcohol gets absorbed differently – often faster and stronger. Many users also eat much less overall, so they end up drinking on what is basically an empty stomach. That makes the effects hit harder and quicker.
On top of that, these jabs seem to change how the brain handles rewards and impulses. Alcohol might not feel as fun or relaxing any more. Instead, it can make emotions sharper, bring on anxiety, low mood, or sudden tears. One GP who specializes in weight management, Dr Maurice O’Farrell, explained it well. He said the drugs alter both the speed and the quality of how alcohol feels in the body. Some people lose the craving for drink altogether, but for others the experience just turns unpredictable and unpleasant.
This side effect is not the most talked-about one in official trials. Everyone hears about nausea, vomiting, or constipation. But real-life stories like these show how it can quietly change social habits. Women who used to enjoy a relaxed drink with friends or family now think twice. Some stop drinking completely. Others limit themselves to tiny amounts and still worry. Hosting events, going to parties, or even a quiet night with a partner can feel risky.
The stories raise bigger questions too. These jabs help with weight, and that brings real health wins – better blood sugar, less strain on joints, and more energy. But if they take away small daily pleasures, is the trade-off always worth it? Many women say they are glad they lost the weight but feel sad about losing their easy relationship with alcohol. One called it a life-changing problem she never expected.
Experts note that GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro might also reduce other impulsive behaviours, such as smoking or shopping too much. That sounds positive. Yet for moderate drinkers who never had issues before, this new low tolerance feels like a surprise downside.
If you are thinking about starting Mounjaro or already using it, keep this in mind. Talk openly with your doctor about any changes in how alcohol affects you. Start low and slow if you do drink. Eat something small before a drink. And listen to your body when emotions suddenly spike after just one glass.
The women in these stories are not alone. As more people try these injections, more personal tales come out. Some love the results and adapt easily. Others weigh the benefits against the hidden costs. Weight loss can feel amazing, but it should not come with unexpected emotional rollercoasters at every social event.
In the end, Mounjaro and similar jabs are powerful tools. They help thousands slim down and feel healthier. But like any medicine, they work differently for each person. These mums show that even a “miracle” jab can bring surprises – like turning a relaxing glass of wine into something you no longer trust or enjoy.
If you have tried Mounjaro, share your own experiences in the comments. Did you notice changes with alcohol? Or did other side effects stand out more? Stories like this help everyone understand the full picture before making big choices about their health.
The lesson is simple. Celebrate the stones you lose but stay alert for the unexpected things you might gain along the way. Your social life and peace of mind matter just as much as the number on the scales.
